It has been raining lately. The sales of topical and oral painkiller has increased. I could not help but think : Does changes in the weather causes more joint pain?
Many people that I'd spoken to, say they definitely feel more pain on their knees, hip, wrist, ankle, elbow, shoulder on rainy days, what's your views?
This is a hotly debated topic for years. There has been no conclusive scientific evidence to suggest weather plays a part in aggravating joint pain. I realised it is very important to know there are many types of joint diseases. Certain type of joint pain which is related to rheumatoid arthritis (RA), we could not ignore the correlation. Why? because there have been thousands of years of evidence to suggest the connection. The Greek and the Chinese medical terms to defined RA are translated as 'wind and wet' disease in Chinese and Rhuma in Greek means watery discharge might refer to the fact that the joints are swollen or that the disease may be made worse by wet weather.
Osteoarthritis (OA) on the other hand, is related to wear and tear of joints. When a storm approaches, the atmospheric pressure drops. Some scientific evidence suggest the drop in pressure can lead to expansion and contraction of joint cartilages, which trigger the nerves surrounding the joints, in return leads to flare up of joint pain. The evidence explain why elderly can sometime predicts when a storm is approaching.
However for the other types of joint pain, which could be due to injuries, side effects of certain medications, cancer treatment, back pain and so on, may be we can not blame it on the weather for the flare up of pain. More scientific researches are required to explain the connection between weather and joint pain.
